Teen acne can appear as early as age nine. Almost all teens are affected by acne when hormones go into overdrive (causing the sebaceous glands to be stimulated), resulting in oily skin that is more prone to breakouts.
This is a time in your life that good skin care becomes essential. A daily skin care regime is one of the most important parts of maintaining your skin's health. Most teens experience some oily skin conditions as their hormones are changing. This is not the time to use the same skin care products as your Mom. Your skin type is different. The following are valuable steps in good skin care for Teens and Tweens.
Step #1 - Cleansing
Cleansing should be done first thing in the morning and last thing at night to be most effective. This removes surface impurities, make-up, and excess skin oils, helping to prevent pores from becoming clogged. It is important to use gentle skin balancing cleansers suitable for your skin type. Avoid harsh soaps and other products containing alkaline and chemicals that can dry your skin and wash away natural essential oils. Now is the time to stop using regular soap on your face. All of EcoSentials soaps are chemical- free and all-natural. Quality cleansers may contain such ingredients as clay. This helps to gently exfoliate and cleanse in one step.
For Teen or Tween skin I recommend organic foaming cleansers, our goats milk soaps (see our soaps and cleansers) or our French Green Clay cleansing bar (especially for acne or oily skin), and especially our Mineral Spa Bar which works well for acne and combination skin.
How you cleanse your skin:
Moisten your face with lukewarm water and cleanser.
Gently spread the product over your skin, using soft, upward circular movements for about a minute.
Never scrub or use downward motions on your face as this may cause premature wrinkles or sagging, especially around the eyes. Rinse off the cleanser using lukewarm water and gently pat dry your face.

Step #2 - Toning
The second step to give you the very best skin is to use a toner for your skin type. Toning should be be done
after cleansing - before moisturizing. Toners remove any left-over residue from cleansers and help refine pores and prevent build-up of dead skin cells. It is just as important to use the right toner when you have acne or blemishes as the correct cleansing or moisturizing of your skin. If you want healthy, vibrant skin, don't skip this step. Quality toners
will minimize the appearance of pores, protect the skin from loss of moisture, add nutrients and restore the skin's pH balance. A good toner will remove surface oils and debris which may be helpful for oily or acne-prone skin.
How you tone your skin:
Always apply the toner to a cleansed face. Avoid the eye area. The correct way to apply a toner is with a cotton cosmetic pad. Saturate the cotton pad and gently pat the toner over your face or gently dab the affected area. Most people, however, prefer to mist on a toner. It is a good idea to mist your face and neck with your eyes closed, about 6 inches away. Never rub your skin when applying a toner.
We have the following Toner prepared for you.
Clarify Toner - for sensitized, oily, rosacea, eczema, or acne skin. Infused with soothing, anti-inflammatory White Willow Bark Extract and healing Organic Tamanu Oil. Good for Teens and Tweens' troubled skin.

Step #3 - Moisturizing
The third step of your daily skin care regime should be done morning and night. Your skin needs to be moisturized to restore moisture loss from the drying effects of the elements; wind, sun, central heating, cold and pollution to name a few. A good moisturizer protects your skin, provides nutrients and prevents moisture loss, thereby slowing down the aging process. A quality moisturizer will maintain the acid mantle* of your skin keeping the pH in balance. Moisturizing is an essential part of facial care.
*The acid mantle is a very fine, slightly acidic film on the surface of the skin acting as a barrier to bacteria, viruses and other potential contaminants that might penetrate the skin.
How you moisturize your skin:
Use after cleansing and toning. Apply moisturizer to damp skin. Put a sufficient amount of moisturizer into the palm of your clean hands. Warm it up and soften it gently with a circling motion between your hands before applying to your face. This will make it more spreadable helping to prevent a too-heavy application in any one area. Apply the moisturizer (excluding the eye area) using an upward stroking motion to your face and neck using your fingers, ensuring that every part of the skin has been covered. Lightly massage the lotion in until it is completely absorbed into the skin. Use your ring and index finger tips to apply moisturizer to the sensitive skin around your eyes. Dabbing them while gently walking the finger tips around the eyes. Never drag on the delicate muscles around the eyes. This may cause premature wrinkles, sagging and dark circles.
